Different Cannabinoids and What They Mean

Cannabinoids 101

The cannabis plant produces over 100 natural cannabinoids, and several lesser-known ones are quickly making a splash in everything from drinks to gummies, topicals and daily supplements. Each one brings something a little different to the table.

With that said, here's your quick guide to the cannabinoids and what makes each one unique:

THC: The uplifting buzz

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the cannabinoid most people have heard of, and it’s the one responsible for that lifted, social, easygoing feeling. But what many people don’t realize is that dose makes all the difference.

A high dose from an edible can leave you glued to the couch wondering when the night will end. A low, precise dose is a completely different experience: light, social, and easy to enjoy without taking over your night.

That’s where beverages come in. Unlike smoking or edibles, low-dose THC beverages make it easy to control how much you consume. The label tells you exactly how much THC you’re getting, so you can drink the whole thing, have half, or sip slowly and see how you feel. You’re in control of the experience.

CBD: The calm cannabinoid

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, meaning it doesn’t produce the high associated with THC. Instead, CBD is often used for its more subtle, calming effects. Research suggests CBD may influence the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in processes like stress response, sleep, mood, and pain perception.

On its own, CBD tends to feel subtle rather than dramatic. Part of that comes down to dose - research suggests most people need around 25-50mg to feel a noticeable effect. Think of it less as something you feel immediately and more as a cannabinoid that can help create a sense of ease.

CBN: The sleepy one

CBN (cannabinol) is what you get when THC ages and breaks down over time - and along the way, it picks up a reputation for being deeply relaxing. Where THC tends to lift you up, CBN tends to bring you down, gently.

It's the cannabinoid most associated with winding the body down and easing into sleep, without the grogginess that comes with a lot of over-the-counter options.

THCV: The energizer

THCV is a rare, naturally occurring compound found in only trace amounts in most cannabis and hemp plants. It's chemically similar to THC but behaves quite differently in the body. THCV has gained attention for potentially suppressing appetite, the opposite of THC's well-known "munchies” effect.

It’s often described as more clear-headed and energizing, which is why you'll see it showing up in daytime formulations instead of nighttime ones.

CBG: The clear-headed cannabinoid

CBG (cannabigerol) is sometimes called the "mother cannabinoid" because it's actually the building block that other cannabinoids are derived from during the plant's growth cycle.

On its own, it's associated with a clear-headed, calm, and balanced feeling. It's a common supporting player in blends designed to feel grounded rather than buzzy. Unlike THC, it doesn’t produce a noticeable high, making it appealing for daytime use when you want to feel relaxed without feeling altered.

CBC: The supporting player

CBC (Cannabichromene) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that’s being studied for its potential anti-inflammatory and mood-supporting effects. It also interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system in unique ways, making it an interesting cannabinoid to watch as research continues.

It's rarely used alone - you'll usually find it working alongside other cannabinoids, adding depth to how a blend feels rather than driving the experience itself.

Matching the cannabinoid to the moment

At the end of the day, the question isn't "which cannabinoid is best" - it's "which cannabinoid is best for this moment?"

  • Want to feel buzzed and social? That's THC territory.
  • Want to fall asleep at a decent hour? That's CBN’s job.
  • Want to feel a little relaxed without the buzz? That's where CBD comes in.

Once you know what each cannabinoid does, choosing which one is best for the moment stops being a guessing game and starts being intentional.
